Ways to hack EV battery: threat model of battery management system and how to set EV on fire. ๐๐ฏโฃ๏ธ๐ฅ๐
Security researchers Shravan Murlidharan, Varsha Ravulakole, Jyothi Karnati, and Hafiz Malik share their security analysis of battery management systems (BMS): how critical functions like temperature monitoring, state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) can be manipulated by attackers, and what the impact would be.
Why this is important? BMS is the system responsible for maintaining healthy operating conditions of the battery in electric vehicles, for example.
According to the paper, a BMS can be tricked without changing any battery data at all - by only altering timestamps. An attacker can make the BMS think the battery is more or less charged than it really is, potentially causing overcharging and overheating.
Very interesting reading.
