Satellite modems and how to hack them: attack surface and โpay-to-secureโ business model ๐ฐ๏ธ๐ก๐ถ๐พ๐จ๐ปโ๐ป
An international group of academic security experts presented the results of their comprehensive research on off-the-shelf commercial satellite modems last year. The authors mapped security vulnerabilities and attack vectors for this type of equipment.
An interesting detail: encryption on many commercial satellite modems is turned off by default - and sometimes costs extra to enable. As a result, many users never activate encryption, leaving satellite traffic exposed to interception and tampering out of the box. ๐ฒ
