Mechanical keyboards as a new attack vector: threat analysis and technical details to consider ๐จ๐ปโ๐ปโจ๏ธ๐พแฏค๐
Security researcher Emilien Le Jamtel presents his research on mechanical keyboards and how they can become an attack vector. The author explains that, in fact, a modern mechanical keyboard is a small computer, not a harmless input device.
The author analyzed thousands of keyboard firmware binaries but has not found confirmed malicious firmware in the wild - yet. However, the threat model, potential attack scenarios, and in-lab tests show that the threat is real and practical.
In summary: Customizable hardware creates both convenience and risk. A keyboard with firmware, storage, and communication capabilities can potentially attack the computer it is connected to.
I love my mechanical keyboard. But can I trust it now? What about you?
