Hacking ATMs because this is where the money is: Jackpotting and other real-world attacks. 🏧💰🪱👨🏻💻💸
Security researcher Fredrik Sandström shares a presentation about ATM security and real-world ATM hacking cases. The presentation mixes technical insight, physical security flaws, and crime investigations drawn from the author’s 10 years of experience.
Jackpotting is a type of ATM attack where thieves force an ATM to dispense cash on command, usually without using a bank card or PIN. An ATM is a computer, and if attackers control that computer, they can control the cash dispenser.
Especially interesting was that sometimes lazy ATM technicians intentionally break the service locks so they don’t have to remember keys, which makes physical attacks on ATMs extremely easy.
I’ve learned a lot about ATM security and attacks, and I’m sure you will too. Enjoy, and please share!
