Hacking a cheap IP camera for fun: how to use a broken device for security research. π½οΈπͺπ¨π»βπ»ππ
Security researcher Matthew Brugman took on the challenge of reverse engineering a cheap internet-connected security camera. Because if you have a broken piece of hardware lying around at home, why not?
Quite an impressive and interesting journey, from online documentation and hardware disassembly to UART firmware extraction and firmware analysis with Ghidra.
In summary: the camera was cheap but relatively secure, with a strong root password and a smart, minimal Linux installation. The only vulnerabilities and successful attacks required physical access, which is totally acceptable for a budget device (IMO).
Have a lookβthis presentation is a great example of how to make use of broken hardware before sending it off for recycling. And please share it with your peers!
