Cell phone roaming and how to hack it: SoR systems and bugs in the Diameter protocol. ☎️🌐📱💣💰
Security researchers Sebastiaan Groot and Frank Cozijnsen shared their experience and research last month in the unique field of mobile network Steering of Roaming (SoR) systems based on the Diameter protocol.
Steering of roaming is a system used by mobile network operators (MNOs) to control which foreign mobile network their customers (cell phone users) connect to when traveling abroad.
From understanding the basics of SoR functionality and the Diameter protocol to fuzzing the protocol and finding vulnerabilities in Diameter server software, this was very interesting and insightful research.
Strongly recommended, especially if you work in telco cybersecurity.
